On the court, this month we’re testing the OxDog Curve Stick.  The curve literally means that there is a curve (bend) in the shaft.  The curve is paired with the Avox blade for aggressive play. In this configuration players can get more power out of their shots.  This stick currently retails for $140 USD.  The stick comes with a singular tactile grip; while the blade is pre-curved with the option to create a custom pocket in the toe.  The color of the stick is a distinct black and green.

I have seen this model around for a bit, but have never been able to try one out.  I’ve been curious to see how it would work.  I thought having the curve in the shaft would throw me off, and it seemed like a gimmick.  That all changed when I started playing around with it.  This shaft is comprised of carbon composite and the curve of the shaft made it easy to shoot.  I really like the Avox blade, and the angle of the face really works with my style of play and shot.  The stick has a flex rating of 27, which is quite stiff and compared with carbon and curve steps up the overall performance of the stick.  A 27 flex is not my preferred stiffness as I’ve found difficulty getting performance out of other sticks.  I had no problem with at least feeling like I was using all the performance the technology provided.  I tested a 101cm stick, which is a good fit for me coming in at just over 6 feet tall.

Overall impression

Right out of the box I liked this stick.  From a visual perspective it looks cool with vibrant colors.  My only wish was a matching green grip, but that’s a personal preference and easy fix to replace.  I really enjoy using this stick.  It’s lightweight and comfortable in my hand.  I felt it had a balance to it when shooting, dribbling, and passing.  I notice improvement in power using it, and I liked that while it has a 27 flex rating it didn’t feel like it.  When we talk about equipment and thinking about why one stick costs more than another this is a great example.  This is a professional level stick that performs accordingly.  If you’re looking for a piece of equipment that will take your game to the next level this is worth a look.  I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in your decision.
